A pool skimmer is a device that helps clean a swimming pool. It captures floating debris, such as leaves, flowers, dirt, twigs and dead insects.
What is a Pool Skimmer?
The pool skimmer is a filter that collects floating debris before it sinks to the bottom.
In-ground pools have most skimmers built into their upper sides. The suction draws debris from the pool and traps it. The majority of pool skimmers can be accessed from the deck via a trap door, hatch, or ladder. It is possible to attach a vacuum line to the skimmer.
Skimmers for Inground Pools
A surface skimmer is usually made from plastic (or precast concrete) and has a tank on its upper side with a projecting neck. The weir regulates how much water enters the skimmer and performs the skimming operation. The weird adjusts to allow only a thin layer water to spill over. Water is quickly pulled off the pool surface, keeping a large portion of it clear.
A skimmer placed in a convenient location can clean approximately 500 square feet of its surface. The pump can be put under additional strain if the debris is not removed regularly. The skimmer basket must be cleaned daily during the swim season.
An equalizer line is required to be installed in a skimmer. This is a pipe that runs from the bottom of skimmer basket through pool walls and into the water. If the water level drops below the weir level, the equalizer prevents air from entering the system. The pump could stall if air is allowed to enter the system.
Many pool skimmers are equipped with automatic water level controls, automatic chlorinators, and other features.
Robotic pool skimmers
Floating and robotic pool skimmers, which offer an alternative to stationary models, have been introduced in recent years. These automatic skimmers, powered by solar or batteries, float on top of a pool collecting any debris that moves through it. Solar Breeze NX is a popular product that reduces time and effort, particularly in areas where winds can carry leaves and other debris into the pool. Because it works independently from the pool pump, it can lower your energy bills.
Another automatic skimmer, the SkimmerMotion, which is a whirlpool-like device, connects to an automatic pool cleaner (vacuum) and collects any debris that floats in the pool. The pool’s filter system is then sent the debris.
Floating pool skimmers and units hanging on the edge of above-ground pools are best because they have thin walls. Keep your skimmers in good condition for both above-ground and in-ground swimming pools by cleaning out the skimmer basket every day during swim season.
Skimmers for Hot Tubs and Spas
Redwood hot tub skimmers don’t usually have a basket. Instead, they skim the surface to remove any debris and then filter it through a plastic screen. Some spas come with skimmers that have cartridge filters.
Do You Need to Add Chlorine Tabs To A Pool Skimmer?
Some pool owners believe that placing chlorine tablets, also known as hockey or chlorinated pucks, in the skimmer basket reduces time. However, most pros advise against it. High levels of acid can cause damage to the filter and may require more frequent replacement.
